Chivalry

Chivalry is dead, as they say. Or rather, as the girls say. But I agree. Why? Because the greatest evidence is that when a guy is chivalrous to a lady, it will be assumed by his friends that he has taken an interest in her. He can't be gentlemanly and generous just because he wants to be - there must be a reason for his gallant act!

Chivalry in guys is a myth. We are chivalrous for a reason. The only time chivalry manifest itself is when a guy is courting a girl.

And this apparently, sums up how most people feel about chivalry in Singaporean guys.

If you cannot detect it, I am being sarcastic.

Anyway, just came home from Mayday's concert.

You can see nothing from this photo. Because camera phones aren't meant to zoom in.

It was tiring. Was standing for the most part of the 3 hour concert. But it was pretty fun.

Have to wake up early tomorrow to cut hair. Or rather, I hope I can wake up early to cut hair tomorrow.

First paper on Wednesday. So much left to understand...I hate exams, and I'm glad this will be the last time. But yet, I don't really want school to end.

I am a bundle of contradictions..

Package tour or free and easy?

Ask anyone which is better and they will probably say something along the lines of:
Package it hectic, but you don't have to do any planning yourself.
Free and easy is flexible, but it might be quite troublesome to plan.

But what everyone neglect to mention, is that in the midst of planning a free and easy tour yourself, you actually get to learn much more of the country, then if you were going on a package tour.

Forbidden Kingdom

Caught Forbidden Kingdom on Monday. I didn't know the Jade Emperor or Sun Wu Kong can speak in English. It would seem normal, that in ancient China, for one Chinese to meet another, that the first language they would speak to each other in is English. Though they did throw in a few sentences of Chinese every now and then, damage has been done.

This reminded me of the time when I caught Around the World in 80 days - by Jackie Chan again. The characters in the movie arrived in a small village in China, the hometown of the character played by Jackie Chan. And lo and behold! They found a note that Jackie had written to his mother...and it was in English.

There is always this discussion about how globalisation is eroding away our cultural roots. I say, just watch one of Jackie Chan's movies. Just watch Forbidden Kingdom for the answer.

The entire dialogue of the movie was super cheesy. Especially when Jackie Chan was teaching that American boy kungfu.

The only draw of the movie, was probably to see Jackie and Jet Li fight. If only the main dialogue was in Chinese, then perhaps I would give this movie some chance.

On another topic, I was having ice-cream along the river at Clarke quay earlier just now, in the evening. The weather was cool, the lights were pretty. And beside me was a mother and her 2 children. And there was a little whimsical chatter going on about them. The combination of the scenery, the weather and the soft chatter... It is at times like this, that I feel that all is well with the world.

Free Coffee

I got this in my NUS mail yesterday. It's from my lecturer.

An excerpt of the email reads:
"At the same time, please come to see me, if you have any questions. As a bonus, I will offer coffee (or alternative drink) for the first three students who will come to see me first. So, please try your best to win a cup of coffee from me!"

And another from him today, when he uploaded the tutorial answers:
"As I emailed you earlier, please come to see me if you have any questions/queries. DON'T MISS YOUR CHANCE OF WINNING A GOOD COFFEE FROM ME."

Haha! So it's now a contest. I find this so funny and amusing.

Closer to the end

Finally handed up my thesis. The last FYP presentation was last Tuesday. Everything has ended. At last, a little weight is off my shoulders.

My FYP had its fair share of problems.

1) Electrochemical experiment setup sort of spoilt (delayed for several weeks)
2) No crucibles, had to order (took about 6 weeks to arrive)
3) No sodium tetraborate decahydrate, also had to order (1 week delay)
4) RBS broke down (for 3 weeks)
5) XPS down (and it was down until I've decided not to use it anymore)
6) Physics workshop cutting machine spoilt (2 weeks delay)

I've spent more time waiting then actually doing my experiments. Also, most of the time my "mentor" didn't really care much, and my prof. wasn't really around either. But in retrospect, I've learnt alot on my own. And the overall experience was not too bad at all.

What's left now, is a small project and my finals. Last lesson was on Wednesday. And it wasn't until I returned home, that I realise it will probably be the last school lesson I'll ever be taking in my life...

Bye bye my school life...I will miss you.

"More birds, more luck"

Finally found the time to update my blog.

Actually, no...no time is just an excuse. Was just kind of lazy.

One says that if birds flew into your home, it'll bring good luck. So what happens if one decides to build a nest right in a little corner of your room?

Came home from school one day to find my dad complaining that a bird flew in and wanted to make a nest...

The remnants of the bird's nest...

Well, I live on the highest floor, and right outside my window is actually a little shelter. So birds love to land on the air con unit, or on the ledges by the wall. Or they would come and take up shelter during rain...

Actually, I don't mind. Nice to have them for company. I wouldnt mind them starting a family in a nest right in my room either. I'll be like that disney adapation of snow white, with birds for friends. Hah.

But then they would defecate. Their nests would attract insects. And they are mynahs - not exactly robins or the prettier kinds of birds.

Insects love me, now birds love me. I am just waiting for a puppy to stroll through my house gates now...
